Which bed size is right for you?

Have you ever wondered: What is the difference between King and California King? What is the difference between Queen and Olympic Queen? This is your guide to the various sizes of bedding offered at www.egyptiancottonbedsheets.com!

{graphic from chooseamattress.com/mattress-sizes/}

We offer California King, King, Split King, Olympic Queen, Queen, Full, Extra-Long Twin and Twin sheets.

King (aka Eastern King or Standard King): These sheets fit the widest mattress on the market (76″ wide). A King mattress is the same length as a Queen, and approximately the same size as two Twin mattresses side by side.

  • Eastern (Standard) King Size Mattress: 76 inches wide x 80 inches long
  • King Sheet Sets come with 1 King fitted sheet, 1 King flat sheet and 2 King pillowcases

California King (aka Western King): A California King mattress is 4″ longer and 4″ narrower than a Standard King. This makes it a better choice for people over six feet tall, though it gives less “elbow” room from side to side.

  • Western (California) King Size Mattress: 72 inches wide x 84 inches long
  • California King sheet sets come with 1 California King fitted sheet, 1 California King flat sheet and 2 King pillowcases

Split King (aka Dual King): Two extra long twin size mattresses (39″ wide x 80″ long) placed side-by-side to make a king mattress surface (78″ wide x 80″ long). These mattresses are typically found on adjustable or sleep number beds. A split king sheet set is made with 2 Twin Extra Long fitted sheets, 2 pillow cases, and 1 King flat sheet.

  • Split King Mattress: 78 inches wide x 80 inches long
  • Split King sheet sets come with 2 XL Twin fitted sheets, 1 King flat sheet and 2 King pillowcases

Queen: Queen mattresses are 21″ wider and 5″ longer than a Twin bed and 6″ wider and 5″ longer than a Double size bed. Each adult has 9″ less sleep space than in a twin bed.

  • Queen Size Mattress: 60 inches wide x 80 inches long
  • Queen sheet shets come with 1 Queen fitted sheet, 1 Queen flat sheet and 2 standard pillowcases

Olympic Queen (aka Expanded): Olympic Queen is a novelty size created by Simmons. It is 6″ wider than a standard Queen mattress.

  • Olympic Queen Size Mattress: 66 inches wide x 80 inches long
  • Olympic sheet sets come with 1 Olympic fitted sheet, 1 Olympic flat sheet and 2 Olympic queen pillowcases

Full (aka Double): Full mattresses are only 15″ wider than a Single bed, leaving only 27″ of space per person. At 75″ long, a Full size bed may be too short for some taller adults

  • Full Size Mattress: 54 inches wide x 75 inches long
  • Full sheet sets come with 1 Full fitted sheet, 1 Full flat sheet and 2 standard pillowcases

Extra-Long Twin: Extra-Long Twin mattresses are 5″ longer than a standard twin. They’re often used in college dorm rooms to accommodate tall teens.

  • Extra-Long Twin Mattress: 39 inches wide x 80 inches long
  • XL Twin sheet sets come with 1 XL Twin fitted sheet, 1 XL Twin flat sheet and 1 standard pillowcase

Twin (aka Single): Twin mattresses are the most common choice for children’s bedrooms and single person sleeping arrangemens. They fit bunk beds and sometimes have a trundle underneath.

  • Twin Mattress: 39 inches wide x 75 inches long
  • Twin sheet sets come with 1 Twin fitted sheet, 1 Twin flat sheet and 1 standard pillowcase

Note: What is “standard” is occasionally changed by some manufacturers. Before you purchase bedding, be sure to know the exact measurements of the bed you have purchased. Some “standard” fitted sheets may not fit. Each of the sheet sizes are listed on our website.

{Some sizing detail information came from an article on About.com.}

Q&A: Why does Ply matter in the thread count?

Ply refers to the number of single fibers twisted together before woven into fabric. Each ply is called a ‘single’ because it can’t be broken down into more strands; if you try pulling one of the singles apart, you get loose fiber.

{photo courtesy of bed.com}

The thread count is the number of threads per square inch both vertical and horizontal. Thread counts can range from 80 to 1500. By twisting two threads together, mills can double the thread count. This is called 2 ply. If they twist three fibers together, they can triple the thread count and it is a 3 ply fabric. Some 1000 thread count fabrics are actually 330 thread count 3 ply or 250 thread count 4 ply. The highest possible single ply thread count is 1500.

The fabrics used by www.egyptiancottonbedsheets.com are single ply. That means that when you have a 1500 thread count fabric, you actually get 1500 threads woven together, not 750 twisted and then woven.

{For further reading, learn more about the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the labeling of thread counts on bedding in this FTC statement from 2005.}

What is Sateen?

{sateen weave}

Sateen is a weave construction that has more yarn surface on the face of the cloth than other basic weaves. Putting more yarn surface on the face of the cloth gives the fabric a satin-like texture and luster. After the fabric is woven, it is “calendered” – a process of applying 2000 PSI (pounds per square inch) of pressure. This produces a product that has a more lustrous look and is softer to the touch.

Why Luxury Egyptian Cotton Bed Linens? Part 4: Investment

in·vest·ment [in-vest-muh nt]  – noun: the investing of money in order to gain profitable returns, as interest or appreciation in value.

Egyptian Cotton bed linens are an investment. We know that money does not grow on trees. Everyone needs to make wise decisions about how to spend their money – especially in this economy. Egyptian Cotton bed linens are referred to as “luxury” – not because of the price, but because of the quality. The price can certainly be prohibitive for some shoppers, however you must consider the value of your dollar. If you had to choose between purchasing a set of scratchy sheets for $50 that wears out over the course of 10 years (and repeating this two more times) or purchasing a set of gorgeous, high-quality Egyptian Cotton sheets for $150 that are luxurious, soft and will last you 30 years… which would you choose?

Many people think that luxury Egyptian Cotton sheets are only for the wealthy. Egyptian Cotton linens may cost more than standard linens, but that does not mean they are out of reach for the average consumer. [Our sheets range in price from $41 to $320, depending on the thread count and bed size. There is a set for every budget!] Quality bedding is always a worthwhile investment. Why? We spend 1/3 of our lives sleeping. You will spend more time laying on your sheets than wearing your favorite clothing. The quality of your bedding can impact the quality of your sleep.

The higher the thread count, the softer and more durable the fabric is. If cared for properly, your Egyptian Cotton sheets can last for decades. In fact, most sets of Egyptian Cotton bedding are handed down as heirlooms from generation to generation. You can see that quality bedding is a worthwhile investment, especially when you consider that poor quality bedding can start to thin or ravel after only a few washings.

All of our Egyptian Cotton bed linens are top quality and a worthwhile investment. By purchasing a set, you can get a better price than purchasing individual pieces. When you purchase a set, you are also ensuring that everything will match perfectly. Many people who purchase Egyptian Cotton bed linens overlook purchasing in a set and end up spending more money in the long run.

Shop wise with your hard earned dollars going toward quality products that will last for decades! Visit www.egyptiancottonbedsheets.com to see all of the sizes and colors available.
